Windows 10 receives Start Menu Upgrade in Recent Update

Windows 10 may have been left behind in the pursuit of Windows 11 and its successors. However, the platform has recently seen subtle yet noteworthy enhancements. One such update, designated as KB5031445 and categorized as an optional non-security update for Windows 10 22H2, introduces a discreet but practical change to the Start menu.
This modification entails the introduction of a new “System” badge to certain applications listed in the Start menu. This badge serves as an indicator for applications that have been freshly installed. While this development has been officially documented in the release notes for Windows 11 build 23511, it has not yet been incorporated into the Stable Channel for Windows 10. It’s intriguing to observe Microsoft implementing even minor alterations to Windows 10 without formal inclusion in release notes.
To elaborate on the alteration to the Windows 10 Start menu, under the “All applications” section, system components will now feature a “system” label. This change aims to enhance user navigation and understanding of installed applications, especially those that are integral to the operating system.
Notably, the addition of the “System” badge does not imply that these components are irremovable. Most built-in programs can still be uninstalled through traditional methods, such as right-clicking and selecting “Uninstall.”
Windows 10, currently scheduled to reach the end of its life cycle in October 2025, is not expected to receive significant updates or major new features. Nevertheless, Microsoft may continue to introduce incremental improvements to cater to users who remain loyal to the platform.
