WHO Expressed Concern over the Medical Waste Generated during Pandemic

Medical kits were used on a large scale during the Pandemic. These kits, which are thrown in the garbage after use, are now becoming a problem for the world. At the same time, the World Health Organization (WHO) says that due to the excessive use of gloves, PPE kits, masks and vaccination syringes in an effort to prevent the spread of coronavirus, medical waste has piled up.

Hazard to Health and Environment

The UN health agency WHO reported that thousands of tons of excess medical waste has affected waste management systems. It is a threat to both health and the environment. This threat points to the “dire need” of reforming these systems and the cooperation of both governments and the people. ,

Public will have to be aware

Dr. Margaret Montgomery, technical officer of the WHO’s Water, Sanitation and Health Unit, said that the public should also become aware consumers. This is a lot of waste in terms of quantity. Referring to personal protective equipment (PPE kits), Montgomery said that we think people are wearing excessive PPE kits. WHO says that about 87,000 tonnes of such medical kits received from March 2020 to November 2021 to fight Covid-19 have become useless.

Concern was also expressed about Lifting the Ban

At the same time, regarding the Omicron variant of Corona, the WHO says that it is too early to remove the restrictions to win the war against Corona and prevent the spread of its infection. The WHO said that Omicron may be considered milder than other variants, but most regions of the world are seeing a worrying increase in deaths.
