Barbie beats Super Mario Bros and paints Warner Bros’ smile pink

Barbie passed the $155 million mark in its first weekend, which is a double feat. It is indeed the best release of 2023 (a year of financial breakdown for the film industry), but also and above all the best start for a film by a female director (in this case Greta Gerwig).

To top it off, Oppenheimer’s 80.5 million is added to this cannon launch. Overall, July 22nd and 23rd were the 4th highest grossing weekend in the US… as we measure weekend receipts.  More then Super Mario Bros. movie. (146 million at launch) and Captain Marvel (153 million) in the female director category.

If we join data from the United States to the rest of the world, Barbie has already earned 337 million dollars in international revenue, and seems to be on track to reach the billion dollar mark throughout the year. Not to mention the increase in revenue from derivative products and the famous dolls…
