According to MacRumors, Apple will allow users to change their iCloud email address for the first time with the release of iOS 18.1. The update will also simplify the process of changing old Apple Account email addresses.

Previously, Apple did not permit users to change their primary iCloud email address. While users could create an alias to display a different iCloud address when sending emails, the original address remained visible in scenarios like document sharing, collaboration, or sending calendar invites.

With the iOS 18.1 update, users will be able to change their primary Apple Account email, previously known as Apple ID, directly through the Settings app. This change removes the need for the lengthy process of deleting the old email and re-verifying their identity before selecting a new one.

The update will apply to long-time Apple users who created iCloud accounts before 2012 and used @me.com or @mac.com email addresses.

Although Apple has not confirmed a release date for iOS 18.1, a phased rollout is expected to begin on October 28, according to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman.

Beyond email updates, iOS 18.1 will introduce Apple’s first major foray into generative AI. Apple Intelligence, also set to launch with iOS 18.1, will bring new AI features capable of creating language and images, taking actions across apps, and drawing from personal context to simplify daily tasks.

iCloud has seen other major updates in 2024, including a February redesign of the iCloud for Windows app, enabling better cross-platform integration, syncing iCloud photos to Windows folders, and merging Safari and iCloud bookmarks with Chrome, Firefox, or Edge.
