OpenAI Launches SearchGPT: Revolutionizing Search with Real-Time AI Integration

OpenAI revolutionized the artificial intelligence (AI) market with the release of ChatGPT in November 2022, ushering in an era of generative AI. Now, OpenAI aims to transform the search engine market with the introduction of SearchGPT, an AI-powered search engine that provides real-time information from the internet. Although still in the prototype stage, OpenAI plans to integrate the best features of SearchGPT into ChatGPT in the future.

OpenAI announced the launch of SearchGPT on Thursday, highlighting its ability to offer fast, timely answers with clear and relevant sources. Initially, a small group of users will have access to provide feedback, which will help refine the experience before broader integration into ChatGPT.

SearchGPT allows users to enter queries like any traditional search engine but stands out by delivering conversational responses with up-to-date information pulled from the web. Similar to ChatGPT’s Browse feature, SearchGPT provides links to the sources of its information, making it easier for users to verify facts and conduct further research. Users can also view a traditional search engine results page by clicking a “link” icon, which displays a list of relevant webpages.

An added advantage of SearchGPT is the ability to ask follow-up questions, allowing users to get the desired information without navigating through multiple links or re-entering queries. Currently, about 10,000 users and publishers have access to the prototype, and interested individuals can join a waitlist to try it out.

OpenAI addresses potential concerns from publishers about reduced website traffic due to AI search engines. SearchGPT is designed to connect users and publishers by including proper attribution, links, and citations to original sources. Publishers also have control over how their webpages appear in SearchGPT and can choose not to have their content used for training OpenAI’s models while still appearing in search results.

It remains uncertain whether integrating SearchGPT’s features into ChatGPT will attract users away from Google, which dominates the search engine market with a 91% share. However, OpenAI’s focus is not on creating a Google competitor but on enhancing ChatGPT’s capabilities. Users who already rely on ChatGPT may be further incentivized to use it for search functions as well.

Microsoft has also explored integrating generative AI into search with its Copilot feature in Bing, which saw positive results. In Q3 2024, Bing reached over 140 million daily active users, a significant increase. Similarly, Perplexity, another AI-powered search engine, has gained substantial traction. However, neither has yet to challenge Google’s dominance significantly.
