Windows 11 Update Brings Built-In User Folder Name Customization

With the latest update, a new “User folder name” option appears during the setup stage where you select your PC name. This allows you to manually enter a preferred folder name, making it easier to choose something simple and practical right from the beginning.

Although a way to change the user folder name was introduced around October 2025, it required using the command prompt, which wasn’t very user-friendly. The main improvement now is that the customization can be done directly through the setup interface, without needing technical steps.

Microsoft explained that this enhancement builds on a feature first introduced to Insider users in late 2025. It now enables users to define a custom folder name directly on the “Device Name” screen during Windows setup, simplifying the process even further.

There are still some restrictions: the name must follow standard Windows naming rules, meaning only certain characters-such as letters, numbers, and a limited set of symbols-are permitted. Also, this option is only available during the initial setup. If you skip it, Windows will continue using the default automatic naming method.

This feature is currently available in preview builds of Windows 11, specifically in the Dev Channel (build 26300.8068) and Beta Channel (build 26220.8062), released to Windows Insider participants on March 13, 2026.
