Introducing Microsoft 365 Copilot: Harnessing the Power of AI Across Office Applications

As expected, Microsoft announced Microsoft 365 Copilot a moment ago, and as its name suggests, it will behave like a true “copilot” in the field of productivity. The secret lies in the power of one of the most popular LLMs (large language model), ChatGPT, enriched with data from Microsoft Graph and Microsoft 365 applications, to transform the professional world thanks to artificial intelligence.

So we learn that Copilot becomes an integral part of the applications that make up Microsoft 365 and that are used every day by millions of users, that is, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Teams and much more. The new generative artificial intelligence tool will allow you to increase productivity and improve skills thanks to a completely new experience called Business Chat.

Business Chat combines LLM, applications and data from Microsoft 365 – from calendar, email, chats, documents, meetings and contacts – to do things people couldn’t do before. An example: with natural language requests like “tell my team how to update the product strategy”, Business Chat will generate a status update based on your past meetings, emails and different chat conversations. Today, Microsoft users will get early access to Business Chat in Microsoft Teams.

Microsoft 365 Copilot will change the world of work depending on the type of usage. For example, with Microsoft 365 Copilot in Word, you can start your creative process so you never have to start from scratch again. Copilot gives you a first draft for you to edit, saving you hours of writing, researching and editing. In some cases Copilot will be able to process correct text, in others not, but in any case it will support users in creating texts. With Copilot, the author is always in control of the activities, pursuing his ideas and possibly asking Copilot to shorten a text, rewrite it or provide feedback.

Copilot in PowerPoint will help create presentations from a simple request, adding relevant content from a previously created document. Already in Excel, the user can analyze trends and create graphs from data.

Microsoft 365 Copilot will not only increase individual productivity, but also help create a new model of knowledge for every organization by leveraging vast amounts of data and insights that are largely inaccessible and untapped today. Business Chat works across all your data and business applications to surface the information and insights you need from massive amounts of data. The user will be able to access Business Chat in Microsoft 365 with Bing when signed in to their corporate identity in Azure Active Directory or in Teams.

Furthermore, Microsoft 365 Copilot is more than just OpenAI’s ChatGPT integration with Microsoft 365. It is a sophisticated computing engine that works behind the scenes to combine the power of LLMs with Microsoft 365 applications and business data in Microsoft Graph, which are now accessible to everyone through natural language.

Microsoft 365 Copilot’s core competencies are a productivity breakthrough: it already has the ability to create, summarize, analyze, collaborate, and automate using specific content and business contexts. But does not stop there. Copilot knows how to command applications (eg “animate this slide”) and work between applications, translating a Word document into a PowerPoint presentation.
